At Kavanaugh’s, we look forward to our winter season, and with that in mind are always hopeful to have winter conditions that make it fun for all.
This December we have gotten a couple of early snowfalls as well as a very cold stretch of good ice making weather, which should set us up for a wonderful start to the winter season. The Brainerd and Nisswa lakes area are the perfect winter wonderland with something fun for everyone, all winter long! We are always a bit surprised that more of our guests don’t take more advantage of this unique season that is much more than just cold and ice, but a chance for the perfect quiet getaway with just the right amount of activity to make for a perfect 2–3-day retreat.
For 56 winters we have been welcoming guests to our resort on beautiful Sylvan Lake and have even been named the best Winter Resort in Minnesota by Minnesota’s Best, so we must be doing something right.
With a large natural pond that we turn into a fun ice rink, a beautiful indoor pool area, cross-country ski and snowmobile trails that leave right from our resort, a groomed sledding hill, snowshoeing and a lovely outdoor campfire area, well, there is always something to do.
You could even start your day with some downhill skiing or tubing at Mount Ski Gull, which is just six miles down the road from Kavanaugh’s. Not far away are wonderful restaurants like Ernie’s on Gull, The Legacy Grille, Cowboys of Lake Shore, Sunshine’s Summerhouse, Sidetrack, Dunmire’s, and many more, as well as local breweries like Jack Pine Brewery, Big Axe Brewing Company in the heart of Nisswa, or even a distillery like 5Rocks Distilling Co. in Brainerd.
Shopping is always fun in the area with some amazing shops in Nisswa and numerous great spots in Brainerd/Baxter, including the always popular Christmas Point (which is a great spot for lunch as well).
Over the course of the winter, numerous events are always popular, including the Brainerd Jaycees Ice Fishing Extravaganza and the Gull Lake Frozen Fore to name a couple, and in 2027 the Brainerd Lakes Area will host Hockey Day Minnesota, which will be extremely exciting. Remember to consider Kavanaugh’s as your base for all the festivities!
